Santa Barbara's Bobby Martinez is in eighth place in the ASP World Title Rankings heading into the start of the Billabong Pro Tahiti, which Martinez won last year. Santa Barbara's Tom Curren is keeping the competitive torch aflame after competing in last week's U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. The 46-year-old former World Champion made the trip to Portugal's Azores Islands to compete in this week's Billabong Azores Islands Pro, where he surfed through to the second round on Wednesday.Curren, who was ousted in the first round in Huntington, placed second in his opening-round heat, securing a spot in the second round. Peterson carves out spot in U.S. Open semifinals

Santa Barbara's Lakey Peterson defeated Australia's Tyler Wright in a two-person heat on Friday at the U.S. Open of Surfing, giving Peterson a spot in Saturday's semifinals of the Women's Open competition.It's the first ever U.S. Open for the 15-year-old Peterson, who'll be up against Carissa Moore in one semifinal. UCSB surfers ride away with national title

Coffin, Peterson make finals of USA Championships

Santa Barbara's Lakey Peterson and Parker Coffin conquered several heats to reach the finals of Surfing America's USA Championships on Monday, where they were finally stopped just short of national championships.Coffin ended up in second place in the boys-16 Division, finishing just behind champion Kolohe Andino.
