FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jane Doolittle cleared 5'10" (1.78m) in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas at Randal Tyson Track Center.Doolittle was one of eight athletes to clear 5'10", which was the fifth-highest bar cleared on the day. Lightfoot throws heavy hammer for UCSB

The Gauchos returned to the track this weekend at the Ben Brown Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The main portion of the meet was held Saturday afternoon, with hammer throws being contested on Thursday and a distance carnival being held Saturday night.On Thursday Jean Lightfoot set a personal best in the hammer throw by more than 20 feet, reaching a mark of 173-4 (52.83m) to take third in the meet. Organista, Edwards lead Vaqs at WSC Relays

Matt Organista and Garrett Edwards took second and third in the men's 3000m on Friday in 9:14.49 and 9:18.86, respectively, to lead SBCC in the WSC Relays at Ventura College.Organista also ran on the distance medley relay squad that placed second in 10:34.03. Johan Lindqvist took second in the triple jump (13.99m) and third in the long jump (6.29m) on Saturday as SBCC opened its track and field season at the Pomona Pitzer All-Comers meet in Claremont. The outdoor track season kicked off on Saturday for the Gauchos with the only home meet of the season. UCSB's Jane Doolittle cleared 5-11.5 (1.82m) in the high jump at the Husky Classic, setting a new personal best and meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. SEATTLE -- Barbara Nwaba scored 3931 points to capture second place in the pentathlon at the UW Invitational, held at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor track facility.Nwaba's score places her on the bubble for qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Coach Sam “The Rock” Adams passes away

Sam Adams is shown above in 1992, the last of his 34 years as a track-and-field coach at UCSB, where he achieved an international reputation.

Sam Adams, retired UCSB head coach and former assistant at Westmont College, died on Monday evening January 11.  He passed quietly under the gentle care of his wife, Sue.  Sam had suffered through Alzheimer’s disease the last few years but handled himself with great dignity as was his want, and Sue managed his care in the same manner.Sam competed in the 1952 and 1956 Olympic Trials in the decathlon.
