SBCC’s Davis shatters school mark in shot put

Zoe Davis had an outstanding performance on Friday as SBCC captured 10 events in the SLO Track Town Classic, hosted by Cuesta in San Luis Obispo.Davis, a freshman from San Anselmo, Calif., shattered the SBCC women’s shot put record with a heave of 12.05 meters (39 feet, 6 1/2 inches). Schaeffer wins State Scholar award

Erika Schaeffer, a standout runner on the SBCC cross country and track teams, has been named to the 2011 California Scholar Athlete Honor Roll. Schaeffer had a 3.96 GPA and was one of 11 women to receive the highest student-athlete honor from the California Community College Athletic Association. She finished 13th in the 2010 State Cross Country Championships and was the Southern Cal steeplechase champion in the 2011 track and field season. Westmont senior Adam Thompkins tallied 4,939 points to win the Azusa Pacific Indoor Heptathlon and establish himself as one of the top multi-event contenders in the NAIA. Martin places 8th in NCAA 800 final

UCSB's Ryan Martin finished eighth in the 800-meter final at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Friday night in Des Moines, Iowa.Running after an hour rain delay, Martin faded on the second lap and came in at 1:47.62. The winner was sophomore Robby Andrews of Virginia in a statdium-record time of 1:44.71. UCSB’s Ryan Martin advanced to the final of the men’s 800 meters on Wednesday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.Martin ran 1:46.29 to finish fourth in the fastest of three heats. The heat was won by rival Charles Jock of UC Irvine (1:45.77). EUGENE, Ore.-- Ryan Martin is headed to the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters after qualifying in the quarterfinals on day two of the preliminaries at Oregon's Hayward Field.Martin placed first in heat three with a time of 1:48.70 and will be the only Gaucho so far who has qualified for the national meet in Des Moines, Iowa.
