CIF Polls: Dos Pueblos softball starts season on top

Ventura overcomes 4-hitter to edge SBCC

Alyse Harris threw a four-hitter on Saturday but Ventura still managed to pull out a 3-2 softball win in the championship bracket of the San Diego City Invitational. The Vaqueros (3-5) tied for fifth in the 15-team tourney.Freshman first baseman Natalie Orosco went 2-3 with an RBI single in her return to the San Diego area.The Vaqueros took a 2-0 lead in the second. Gauchos drop two at Campbell/Cartier Classic

Pitching fuels two Vaquero wins

Alyse Harris and Celeste Acosta turned in a pair of pitching gems on Friday, leading the SBCC softball team to a two wins at the San Diego City Invitational. The Vaqueros (3-4) beat San Diego City 8-2 and Napa Valley 5-2 in a game shortened to six innings by the time limit.Harris tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk in the morning game. UCSB falls to Boise State and Oregon State on opening day of Campbell/Cartier Classic

UCSB softball suffered a pair of tough losses on Friday, the opening day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic. Tuesday’s win was extra sweet for the SBCC softball team. The Vaqueros topped L.A. Mission 7-3 for their first victory in their home debut. And they did it on Valentine’s Day.Alyse Harris, a freshman from Denver, pitched a five-hitter and got the final batter to look at strike three with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh. The UC Santa Barbara softball team opened the 2012 campaign on Thursday afternoon against No. 9/14 Tennessee (1-0) at the Kajikawa Classic, which is being hosted by Arizona State. SBCC dropped a wild 11-10 game to Glendale in its softball season opener on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Tournament. In a night game, the Vaqueros led Mt. San Antonio 2-0 before the Mounties rallied for a 10-2 victory.Santa Barbara outhit Glendale 9-5 in the opener but commited five errors and left 10 runners on base. Girls fast-pitch softball teams from all over central California will converge on Elings Park this weekend to compete in the ASA Western Nationals qualifying tournament.Co-hosted by the Goleta Valley Girls Softball Association, the tournament will feature more than 50 teams in age groups 10-under, 12U and 14U.
