Guzman, Littleton shine in Vaquero opener

It wasn’t exactly a home game on Friday evening but SBCC made itself at home in a 4-1 men’s soccer victory over College of the Sequoias. The Vaqueros opened the season on the synthetic turf at Girsh Park in Goleta due to work on the track at La Playa Stadium.Nikolai Littleton and Jean-Carlo Guzman both had a goal and assist for the Vaqueros. Jessica Domenichelli didn’t waste any time finding the net on Friday in her college women’s soccer debut. She had a hat trick in the first 26 minutes and went on to score four times in SBCC’s 4-1 season-opening victory over College of the Sequoias at Girsh Park in Goleta.The freshman forward from El Dorado Hills, Calif., found the net in the sixth, seventh and 26th minutes of the opening half, giving the Vaqueros a 3-1 halftime lead. Maiwald heads home to protect Spartans’ goal

SBCC's Meghan Maiwald will be playing at San Jose State in the fall.

SBCC women's soccer goalie Meghan Maiwald has signed to play for San Jose State. It's a homecoming for the sophomore standout, who attended Leigh High in San Jose.Maiwald was named first team All-Western State Conference in 2008 and '09. She was the No. 2 goalie in the state last year with a 0.35 goals-against average and 11 shutouts. SBCC’s Kirk heading to Belmont Abbey

SBCC men's soccer player Stuart Kirk, a sophomore from Wales, has signed a national letter of intent to play for Belmont Abbey (N.C.). Kirk, a first-team All-WSC choice in 2009, played on back-to-back Vaquero WSC championship teams. Santa Barbara is 22-2-4 in the WSC over the last two years.The forward had five goals and three assists as captain last year and was voted team MVP. Belmont Abbey is an NCAA Div. Seven Vaquero women named all-WSC

Meghan Maiwald has been named to the first-team All-WSC North women's soccer squad for the second straight year. The sophomore from San Jose had the No. 2 goals-against average in the state (0.35) with 11 shutouts. She owns school records for shutouts in a season (13, 2008) and career (24). Maiwald was joined on the first team by teammates Kelly Deckers and defender Alyson Johnson. SBCC fell behind 2-0 at halftime of a first-round Southern Cal Regional men's soccer game on Saturday night at Canyons and never recovered in a 2-1 loss that ended the Vaqueros' season.The Cougars (13-6-2) scored early and then went up 2-0 on an own goal by the Vaqueros (9-7-5). SBCC captured its second straight WSC men's soccer title last Friday but that didn't guarantee the Vaqueros a home game in the first round of the Southern Cal Regional. Ironically, they have to travel to second-place Canyons on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game.Canyons (12-6-2) was seeded eighth, one spot in front of the Vaqueros (9-6-5). Ventura College scored in the 83rd minute Friday night and went on to hand visiting SBCC a 1-0 women's soccer defeat in the regular-season finale.The Pirates (16-3-1, 8-1-1) finished second in the WSC behind Moorpark while the Vaqueros (10-4-6, 5-3-2) were third.
