Boys tennis CIF draws released for Southern Section

The Southern Section's CIF postseason draws were announced on Monday, with Santa Barbara, San Marcos, Carpinteria and Cate receiving home matches to start the playoffs.Dos Pueblos also reached the postseason as the No. 2 team from the Channel League but the Chargers will be travelling for their first-rounder at Peninsula.San Marcos hosts Redondo Union in Tuesday's wild-card round. Friday's non-league tangle between San Marcos and Cate went down to games as the two schools were tied 9-9 after three rounds of play. Cate School not only hosted the Frontier League Swimming Championships for the first time in school history, but its girls team came through with the Rams' first-ever league title on Thursday.The Rams edged Carpinteria 364-346 by winning the final 4x400 freestyle relay. Cate's second-seeded girls lacrosse team dropped a second-round Northern Division CIF match on Thursday, falling to visiting Mira Costa 15-13.The game was tied 13-13 with four minutes to play and Mira Costa was able to control the outcome from there.Cate (11-2) fell behind 13-7 in the second half before stringing together six straight scores to tie the game. The Cate Scool boys volleyball team swept Besant Hill to earn a convincing victory on Wednesday.The set scores were 25-19, 25-16 and 25-20.The Rams were led by a balanced attack. The Cate School baseball team beat Thacher 8-0 on Wednesday to pull within one game of the Dunn School, who leads the Condor League.Justin Lucchesi pitched all seven innings for the Rams, earning a complete-game shutout and his sixth win of the year. Cate lacrosse receives first-round bye for CIF playoffs

Cate girls lacrosse earned the second seed in the Northern Division CIF playoffs, recieving a bye in Tuesday's first round. The Rams will open their playoff run on Thursday at home against the winner of Mira Costa and Peninsula.The Rams would also be home for Saturdays semi-final round if they should win on Thursday. Providence Hall's girls basketball team reached the Division VI CIF Championship game in 2012.
