SBCC drops home opener against Golden West

Golden West won the key points down the stretch in the third and fourth sets on Tuesday night, spoiling the men’s volleyball home opener for SBCC with a 3-1 win in the Sports Pavilion.Matt Winslow pounded a season-high 18 kills but it wasn’t enough for the Vaqueros (2-2), who dropped a 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21 decision in the nonconference match.Chris Utroske, a 6-6 middle hitter, added 10 kills with only one error. First WSC has Iverson on top of SBCC again

Forrest Iverson carded a 2-over 74 on Monday, leading SBCC to second place in the first WSC men’s golf tournament at Valencia Country Club.Iverson, a freshman from Arcata High in Humboldt County, was playing the course for the first time. He finished third behind medalists Travis Bregman and Jacob Graliezer of Canyons, who both shot 72.Iverson has shot 77, 74 and 74 in his first three collegiate rounds.Canyons won the tourney at 375. Shoemake brings SBCC first win

SBCC starting pitcher, Brendon Shoemake, threw six shutout innings to get the win for the Vaqueros.

Brendon Shoemake turned in a masterful pitching performance in the opener on Saturday at Pershing Park, leading SBCC over Cabrillo 5-1 for its first baseball win of the season.In the second game, the Vaqueros (1-2) rallied from an 8-1 deficit and took a 9-8 lead before falling 10-9.Shoemake, a 6-4 freshman from La Canada High, held the Seahawks to one run on three hits over six innings. Matt Winslow had 12 kills on Saturday and Cody Kreitzer added 10 to guide SBCC to a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 men’s volleyball sweep of Grossmont at the Santa Monica Tournament.In the second match, the Vaqueros sent out a completely different lineup and beat San Diego Mesa 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17). Vaqueros drop first two games of the season

SBCC dropped a wild 11-10 game to Glendale in its softball season opener on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Tournament. In a night game, the Vaqueros led Mt. San Antonio 2-0 before the Mounties rallied for a 10-2 victory.Santa Barbara outhit Glendale 9-5 in the opener but commited five errors and left 10 runners on base. Hudson’s comeback win sparks SBCC past Fresno

Talia Hudson rallied for a three-set victory on Friday and SBCC went on to beat Fresno City 6-3 in a women’s tennis match at Fresno.Hudson, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, dropped the first set to Kate Abston 6-4, then captured 12 of the next 13 games to win the last two sets, 6-1, 6-0. Friday was the season opener for SBCC's baseball team. The Vaqueros play a double-header on Saturday.

Joey Epperson and Brandon Laubhan combined for six hits and six RBIs on Friday but SBCC couldn’t overcome a seven-run sixth inning in a 12-6 season-opening baseball loss to Cabrillo at Pershing Park.Epperson, a sophomore first baseman, went 3-for-5 with an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run homer in the ninth. Sophie Angner posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, helping SBCC to an 8-1 victory at Reedley in the Vaqueros’ season opener. Angner is a freshman from Sweden.
