As the hearty runners made their way up Gibraltar Road in the grueling Pier to Peak Half Marathon, they saw the scorched hillsides left by the Jesusita and Tea Fires.There was something burning on the mountain again Sunday morning but it wasn’t brush. It was the emotions of some of the lead runners who missed a turnaround point and lost valuable time and a high finish. The Pier to Peak half marathon is not your average weekend road race. Not by a long shot.Those who enter the annual Labor Day weekend event probably have a masochistic side to their personality. Santa Barbara's Mark Moreno and Eric Forte went 1-2 in Nite Moves' 5k run on Wednesday, each beating the 16-minute marker.Moreno's time of 15 minutes and 33 seconds was the fastest time of the Nite Moves season, in its 14th week out of 20. The previous low was Kevin Lunn's 15:45 on May 27.Mason Edwards, 23, held off Jim West, 54, in the open-water swim to take the top spot in 14:24. There’s a new game in town, as Saturday marked the first ever Pier-to-Pier stand-up and traditional paddle board race.In the men’s short course, James Donovan had the fastest overall time among stand-up races while Eric Mehlberg was the top finisher in the traditional paddleboard (laying flat). The Santa Barbara Junior Lifeguards program hosted its Fiesta Competition at East Beach on Friday with nine regional teams facing off in a variety of events, essentially finding out who can swim, paddle and run the fastest.Santa Barbara crushed the competition, amassing 532 total points throughout the day.
