Barbieri is back in the swim of things after tragic accident

Not even the loss of a limb.Barbieri had to have his left leg amputated just above the knee after breaking his femur and suffering serious damage to his femoral artery in a snowboard accident at Mammoth Mountain this past winter.Yet, there he was on late Tuesday afternoon, lined up along the shore with the other competitors ready to do the 1-mile swim at the weekly Reef and Run Series.Barbieri not only completed the swim, he finished in second place in 22 minutes, 17 seconds. … [Read more...]

Woods crack top 10 in Reef and Run swims

 Spencer Wood led a trio of 12 year olds as top 10 finishers in the 1-kilometer ocean swim at Tuesday’s Reef and Run Series at East Beach.Wood came in third place behind local triathletes Johannes Walcher (16:20) and J. Ritterbeck (18:07) in a time of 18:13. Schroeders take early evening swim together

It was a family affair in the 1-kilometer ocean swim at the Tuesday evening Reef and Run Series at East Beach.The Schroeders: mom Dawn and kids Grant and Erica finished in the top five in the event. At 74 years young, Jeff Farrell can swim faster than many people.The two-time Olympic gold medalist finished ahead of 20 swimmers in the 1-kilometer ocean swim at the Reef and Run Series Tuesday night at East Beach. Jeremy Vaa pulled away from the pack and won the 1-mile swim at Tuesday evening’s Reef and Run Series at East Beach.Vaa, a teacher at San Marcos High, finished in 18 minutes, 56 seconds. Jon Clark tuned up to defend his Semana Nautica Biathlon title this weekend by winning Tuesday night’s Santa Barbara Reef and Run Series duathalon at East Beach.Tuesday's event was part of the Semana Nautica summer sports festival.Clark, 50, a multi-time winner of the biathlon, covered the 1k swim and 5k run in 38 minutes, 56 seconds. Bruice’s victory is a Reef and Run milestone

Reid wins 2nd straight Reef and Run mile swim

Stewart Reid made it 2-for-2 in the Reef and Run mile swim on Tuesday night at East Beach.Reid finished first in 19 minutes, 14 seconds, beating Chris Braden by five seconds. Reid picks up where he left off at Reef and Run

Stewart Reid, a multi-winner last year, captured the first mile swim at the season-opener of the Santa Barbara Reef and Run Series at East Beach on Tuesday.Reid finished in 18 minutes, 50 seconds in the chilly water. He won seven mile swims last year. Reef & Run underway on Tuesday

Reef & Run's third season gets going this Tuesday, with season-opening festivities slated to start around 6:15 p.m. at East Beach.Reef & Run - which features a 5k run, 1k ocean swim and 1-mile ocean swim - will happen every Tuesday until September 13. Athletes can compete in any of the individual legs or tackle the 1k/5k biathlon.The first race begins at 6:25 p.m.Live music accompanies the event every week, starting with DP Fresh on Tuesday.
