SBCC starting pitcher, Brendon Shoemake, threw six shutout innings to get the win for the Vaqueros.

Brendon Shoemake turned in a masterful pitching performance in the opener on Saturday at Pershing Park, leading SBCC over Cabrillo 5-1 for its first baseball win of the season.In the second game, the Vaqueros (1-2) rallied from an 8-1 deficit and took a 9-8 lead before falling 10-9.Shoemake, a 6-4 freshman from La Canada High, held the Seahawks to one run on three hits over six innings. Bullpen has rough start, SBCC drops season opener

Friday was the season opener for SBCC's baseball team. The Vaqueros play a double-header on Saturday.

Joey Epperson and Brandon Laubhan combined for six hits and six RBIs on Friday but SBCC couldn’t overcome a seven-run sixth inning in a 12-6 season-opening baseball loss to Cabrillo at Pershing Park.Epperson, a sophomore first baseman, went 3-for-5 with an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run homer in the ninth. New faces are everywhere on the diamond at Pershing Park, from the infield to the pitching staff to the head coach. Ex-SBCC pitcher Axelrod joins White Sox

Dylan Axelrod, who pitched at SBCC in 2004-05, was called up by the Chicago White Sox on Monday. The White Sox purchased the contract of the right-hander before the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Former Santa Barbara High and SBCC  baseball star Dylan Axelrod has been called up by the Chicago White SoxThe White Sox purchased the contract of the right-hander before the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins and he will be available out of the bullpen.To make room on the 40-man roster, Tony Pena (Tommy John surgery) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. Ex-SBCC pitcher Turnbull signs with Nationals

Former SBCC pitcher Kylin Turnbull signed with the Washington Nationals for a $325,000 bonus on August 15, according to reports in Baseball America and The Washington Post. The 6-foot-5 left-hander was picked in the fourth round of the Major League Draft. He was the 127th overall selection.Turnbull, 21, earned All-WSC North honors and helped the Vaqueros capture the 2011 conference title. SBCC standout pitcher Chris Joyce signed a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.Joyce, the Southern California Pitcher of the Year who went 6-0 with 97 strikeouts and a 1.54 earned-run average, was a 19th-round pick of the Reds in the Major League Baseball Draft.The former Dos Pueblos High star is headed to the Reds’ rookie ball team in Montana.Also signing on Friday was UCSB infielder Mark Haddow with the Chicago White Sox. Ryan Thompson has resigned as baseball coach at Santa Barbara City College after just one season.Thompson guided the Vaqueros to the Western State Conference North Division championship, their first postseason series win and their first Southern California Super Regional appearance. SBCC left-hander Chris Joyce has been named All-American and Southern Cal Pitcher of the Year.
