Amber Belletti of Santa Barbara rose to the ocassion and came away with a bronze medal at the U.S. Track and Field Junior Olympics in Sacramento.Belletti, competing for Club West, threw 26 feet, 6 1/4 inches to place third in the Bantam Girls (ages 9-10) shot put on Saturday. Scarvelis, Fernandez net top-10 finishes at JOs

Nick Scarvelis finished ninth in the shot put and Bryan Fernandez placed eighth in the 3000m at the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics on Thursday in Sacramento.Scarvelis competing in the Young Men’s Division with many of the top 17- to 18-year-old throwers in the country, had a best mark of 56 feet, 1/2 inch with the 12-pound shot.The winning throw was 62-1 by Ben Glauser, the Georgia state high school champion. Local runners place at Masters Nationals

John Brennand was the third American finisher and fourth overall in the 70-74 age division 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the USA Track and Field Masters National Championships in Sacramento.Brennand, 74, representing the Santa Barbara Athletic Association, ran 23 minutes, 3.25 seconds in the 5,000. Doolittle in the top 10 at U.S. Championships

UCSB All-American Jane Doolittle placed sixth in the high jump at the U.S. Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend.Doolitttle, the school’s record holder, cleared 6 feet, 1/2 inch at the championships. EUGENE, Ore. -- Barbara Nwaba finished 12th with 5382 points in the NCAA Championship heptathlon, narrowly missing the All-American honors bestowed upon the top-11 finishers. Thursday was the second day of competition at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.Nwaba was in fifth after Day One but was unable to post an event score over 800 points on Day Two.
