Gaucho women picked to win Big West in cross country

A healthy spread of age groups turned in great performances on an absolutely gorgeous evening for Nite Moves on Wednesday.In the 5K run, 46-year-old Michael Smith turned in a blazing time of 16:43, while 16-year-old Jacob Bartholomew was just three seconds behind. UCSB triathlete Zack Paris held off the kids and a former collegiate All-American to win the 1-kilometer swim at Nite Moves No. 10 at Leadbetter Beach on Wednesday evening.Paris broke 14 minutes, clocking 13:58. John Salman, 14, was a close second in 14:01 and Adrienne Binder, an All-American at Auburn University, was third in 14:05. The “Dominator” was at it again at East Beach on Tuesday.Jon Clark, who has dominated the Semana Nautica 5-mile biathlon since the mid-1980s, tuned up for this summer’s competition by winning the weekly Reef and Run Series duathalon.Clark covered the 1-kilometer swim and 2-mile run in 31 minutes, 43 seconds. Reid churns out another Reef and Run victory

Santa Barbaran Stewart Reid continued his dominance of the 1-mile ocean swim at the Reef and Run Series at East Beach on Tuesday, winning his fourth straight race and fifth of the season.Reid, 36, covered the distance in 22 minutes, 21 seconds. Bedford a good bet at Nite Moves

The runner spoke with an English accent, which is not unusual in Santa Barbara. But it turns out the Englishman who won the sixth Nite Moves 5-k run on Wednesday night is a bit of a celebrity in running circles.Tom Bedford, who was hanging out with friends and fellow runners in a pub after doing the London Marathon 2 1/2 years ago, made a bet that he would finish a marathon under 2 hours and 25 minutes during a three-year period.
