John Loftus sailed to a 24-second victory in Wednesday's Nite Moves 5k, beating out Carpinteria's Ricky Ho with a time of 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Nite Moves and this year's new Reef & Run series completed the 12th of 20 installments in the weekly swim/run event season that runs until September 8.The Nite Moves 5k run was its busiest since June 24, with 264 runners participating. The top echelon had a major teenage presence as 18-year-olds Chris Braden and Matthew Bailey finished 1 and 2 respectively. City hiking trails burned out, remain closed indefinitely

To be sure, the city of Santa Barbara’s hiking-friendly front country has been transformed into a moonscape of desolate land and devastated trails as a result of the Jesusita Fire.As of Wednesday the US Forest Service lifted its closure of the burn area, yet the Jesusita Trail, Tunnel Road Trail, and Rattlesnake Canyon Trail - under the jurisdiction of the County Parks and Recreation Department - remain closed indefinitely. Gaviota Peak offers breathtaking views, hot springs

A weekend with fair weather and a couple days off of work prompted my girlfriend and I to head north to explore the famed Gaviota Peak and its hot spring. While the spring may have been rather tepid, the hike was refreshing and the view gorgeous. The trail head is a short 30-minute drive north of downtown Santa Barbara on US 101.
