Jesse Orosco, born in Santa Barbara in 1957, played for the Dons in the 1970's and would go on to enjoy a 24-year MLB career that included two World Series rings with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers. Orosco holds the major league record for career pitching appearances.Orosco struck out the final batter in the 1986 Series for the Mets to eliminate the Boston Red Sox, famously throwing his glove in the air and dropping to his knees. After winning the National Championship in 2006, six UCSB men’s soccer players from that team went on to play professionally in Major League Soccer.Chris Pontius, a junior in 2006, was drafted in 2008 as the 7th overall pick by D.C. United. He earned an MLS goal of the week in May 2009. There are two Santa Barbara football players who are now a part of the NFL, Alex Mack and Chris Gocong.Former San Marcos Royal Alex Mack recently reached the NFL when he was selected 21st overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns as a center.Mack excelled on both the offensive and defensive line for the San Marcos High football team and was named MVP of the team his senior season.
