Dons top Santa Ynez in early golf showdown

In a season-opening match between two of the top girls golf teams in the county on one of the tougher courses in the area, Santa Barbara High scratched out a 254-263 win over Santa Ynez at Birnam Wood Country Club.With its narrow fairways, there is little margin for error at Birnam Wood.Santa Ynez’s Maddison Shean was the match medalist with a 3-over par 38. Veteran Fox leads Chargers to season-opening victory

Emily Fox helped the Dos Pueblos girls golf team get off to a positive start of the season Tuesday, shooting a 3-over par 39 in a 229-238 non-league win over Valencia at Valencia Country Club.Fox, in her fourth year in the starting lineup, is a returning All-Channel League player.Junior Vanesa Villa, a three-year starter and an all-leaguer last year, fired a 44. Vaqueros lower scores at South Coast Classic

Five improved their scores for SBCC on Monday and the women’s golf team took fifth place in the South Coast Classic at Olivas Links in Ventura.The Vaqueros shaved 22 shots off their first-round score with a 333. That was 13 strokes behind tourney winner Saddleback. SBCC finished at 688 while Saddleback’s 36-hole total was 633.Freshman Nicole Bullemer fired a 3-over 75 to lead the Vaqueros. SBCC opened the women’s golf season on Sunday by shooting 355 in the South Coast Classic at Buenaventura GC in Ventura.The Vaqueros are in sixth place in the eight-team event after one round. Dodge Ward is the 2010 Santa Barbara Junior Golf Tour overall champion.

Dodge Ward learned about handling the pressure keeping a lead in a golf tournament on Monday in the final round of the Santa Barbara Junior Golf Tour Championship.Ward, holding a seven-shot lead going into the final round, fought off a charging Dustin Dalee to win the overall title by one stroke at the Montecito Country Club.Dalee shot a final-round 6-over par 77 to give Ward a scare.
