Bishop prepares for a heavyweight battle in quarterfinals

Bishop Diego was in peak form Friday night in its CIF East Valley Division playoff opener.The Cardinals clicked on both sides of the ball in romping to a 35-0 win over Brentwood in a first-round game at La Playa Stadium.The defense forced seven turnovers and held the Eagles to a mere 132 yards in total offense.When Bishop had the ball, it overpowered Brentwood with a punishing ground game. Arroyo Grande pushed past Dos Pueblos on Friday night in the first round of CIF's Western Division, posting a 41-6 decision behind the play of quarterback Brent Vanderveen.The Eagles outgained the Chargers 369 to 157 on offense. Manny Hernandez, a sophomore linebacker for SBCC, has been chosen first-team All-American Pacific Conference in football.Three other Vaqueros made the elite squad. Sophomore tackle Kenny Ruiz and freshman tight end Tyson Heller were second-team offensive picks. Heller caught 21 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown.
