Gaucho women picked to win Big West in cross country

The Whittier Daily News reported on Thursday that El Rancho High School's Daniel Herrera has signed a letter of intent to attend UCSB next fall and compete for the Gauchos' cross country and track & field programs.Herrera is a three-letter varsity athlete in both cross country and track. Moreno lays down season best at State Championships

SBCC sophomore Mark Moreno took seventh in the State Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning while SBCC's women placed 21st at Woodward Park in Fresno.Moreno, who finished second in the WSC and 16th in the Southern Cal Regional, was clocked in a season-best 20:24 on the 4-mile course. Sergey Sushchikh, Evan Bradford and Briggs Deardorff will keep their running feet moving next week, each qualifying for CIF's Division III Finals at Saturday's Prelims at Mt. Mackenzie Walsh and the Cate girls cross country team locked in CIF Finals berths on Saturday at the CIF Division V Prelims, assuring at least one more race next Saturday at Mt. Dolan named Coach of the Year for regaining X-country title

Pete Dolan was awarded the 2009 Big West Coach of the Year Award in women's cross country, after leading the Gauchos to their fifth Conference Championship in the last seven years.UCSB re-captured the crown after a one-year hiatus, for their seventh crown overall. The women's program has won titles in 1993, 1994, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009, all under Dolan's guidance. The SBCC women's cross country team took eighth place in the Southern Cal Championships on Friday morning at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
