Marymount spikers win Oxnard Junior ToC

The Marymount varsity girls volleyball team won the 15th annual Junior Tournament of Champions in Oxnard last Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Mustangs went 5-0 in pool play and advanced to the Gold Division playoffs as the No. 1 seed. They defeated two teams 25-9 and 25-22 to advance to the championship match and bested La Reina Middle School of Thousand Oaks, 25-10, for the title at Oxnard High’s gym.

Riley Borchardt, a 7th grader, was named the tournament MVP. Seventh grader Paige Doughty and 8th graders Grace Hay and Grace Matthews were named to the 10-player all-tournament team.

This was Marymount’s first championship in the Junior Tournament of Champions in 12 years. The tournament consisted of 25 teams.

The Marymount team is coached by Karen Keltner and Sam Maas. The team members are Sofia Ninness, Grace Matthews, Connie Connaughton, Grace Blankenhorn, Summer Nestlerode, Grace Hay, Tiffany Medel, Riley Borchardt and Paige Doughty.

Marymount of Santa Barbara is a K-8 Independent Day School and is part of the Christian Athletic League of Santa Barbara.
