The top four seeds at the Channel League’s Individual Tennis Tournament advanced through two rounds on Monday, setting up tomorrow’s singles semifinals at Ventura High School.
Top-seeded Yuka Perera, a San Marcos freshman for the league-champion Royals, swept Buena’s Jessica Fernandez in the first round 6-0, 6-0 and Santa Barbara High’s Claire Stotts in the second round 6-0, 6-1.
Second-seeded Cade Sorensen, a Santa Barbara High senior, didn’t lose a game in two matches, defeating Buena’s Destiny Schwab 6-0, 6-0 and Dos Pueblos’ Hannah Kleidermacher 6-0, 6-0.
Dos Pueblos’ Katie Yang was the only one of the top four who was threatened on Monday. Yang cruised through her first round opponent but took three sets to defeat Ventura’s Maya Krishnasamy. Yang dropped the first set 2-6 before rallying to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Buena’s Caisey Lee Emery, the defending champion, and younger sister Colby Shae Emery did not enter the singles tournament.
Perera will meet Yang in one semifinal while Sorensen and Coulson face each other. The championship match is scheduled for Thursday.
The doubles tournament begins on Wednesday.
