XC: Schreck, Gauchos finish 5th at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. – The UCSB women’s cross country team placed fifth out of 30 teams at the 42nd Annual Stanford Invitational. In an early season meeting of west coast powers, Stanford took the team win with a daily low score of 44 pts.

Sarah Schreck showed why she is one of the most consistent runners in the conference by delivering one of the best cross country performances of her career. Running No. 1 for the Gauchos, Schreck placed 28th overall and helped ignite a strong team showing for UCSB.

COMPLETE RESULTS

Finishing the 6,000m course in 21:47.1, the ninth time in her career that she has dipped under the 22 minute mark, Schreck led the UCSB scoring charge by hanging with the chase pack late into the race.

Tori Tsolis ran No. 2 for the Gauchos, finishing on the heels of Schreck in 21:49.0, placing 30th overall. This was the third time in Tsolis’ career that she has dropped under the 22 minute mark for 6,000m and was only seven seconds off her lifetime best, a memorable performance on a challenging Stanford course not known for producing scorching times.

Also under 22 minutes for the Gauchos was Kelsey O’Connell. Running No. 3 and moving up the line-up every so steadily, O’Connell delivered a strong showing, finishing 39th in 21:54.9.

Jenna Hinkle finished in the No. 4 spot for the Gauchos with a new lifetime best over 6,000m of 21:55.3. Hinkle, in just her sophomore year, has become a solid go-to performer and with back-to-back sub 22 minute runs to start the season, is developing into a scoring threat heading into the key meets of the schedule. Hinkle placed 40th overall.

Grabbing the No. 5 spot for the Gauchos was Tori Yanco, crossing the line in 87th overall. Yanco, a freshman from J Serra Catholic HS in San Juan Capistrano, broke into the scoring column for the first time in her career. Yanco finished in 23:01.1.

Running No. 6, just out of the scoring five for UCSB was Emily Lopez, finishing in 88th with a time of 23:05.5. In No. 7 for the Gauchos was Maxine Goyette, finishing 126th with a time of 23:15.4 and running No. 8, freshman Miranda Ross. Ross finished 143rd with a time of 23:35.2.
