Halleck honored as a CIF-SS Hall of Famer

Legendary San Marcos boys basketball coach Maury Halleck is being inducted into the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame.

Halleck is one of 15 impressive and deserving educators that will be honored as the 32nd induction class. Another inductee from Santa Barbara County is Dan Bodary, the highly successful baseball coach at Lompoc High.

The inductees will be recognized at a luncheon at The Grand Conference Center in Long Beach on Oct. 14. In addition, seven outstanding individuals will be honored with a CIF-Southern Section Distinguished Service Award for years of dedicated contributions toward the student-athletes of the CIF-SS. Tony Diaz, an athletic administrator for the Oxnard Unified School District, is among those who are receiving the award.

Halleck coached basketball at San Marcos for 23 years, amassing an overall record of 341-202. He took two teams to the Southern Section finals, won seven Channel League titles and was named CIF Southern Section Coach of the Year four times.

His 1981 Runnin’ Royals went 26-1, with their only loss coming against Long Beach Poly in the section final.

Halleck also coached the boys tennis team to three league titles and the softball team to a pair of championships.

He started his coaching and teaching career in Washington in 1955 before coming to Santa Barbara. His first job was coaching football and basketball at Santa Barbara High before arriving at San Marcos.

The gym at San Marcos is named in his honor.

Halleck is in the Santa Barbara Athlete Round Table and San Marcos Halls of Fame.

Bodary is one of top 20 all-time winningest baseball coaches in the Southern Section. His career record is 615-284-13 and includes four CIF championships, two runner-up finishes and 18 league titles. The baseball field at Lompoc High is named after him

The other members of the induction class include Marijon Ancich (football coach at St. Paul and Tustin), Tom Bergeron (baseball coach at Warren and Gahr), Earl Engman (teacher, coach and administrator at Santa Ana High), Frank Gonzales (wrestling coach at Pacifica and El Dorado), Ed Goorjian (basketball coach at Crescenta Valley), Steve Grady (football coach at Loyola), Don Hyatt (volleyball and softball coach at La Reina), Larry James (boys and girls volleyball coach at La Quinta), Joanne Kellogg (girls basketball coach at Huntington Beach), Ron LaRuffa (baseball coach at Boron, Colton, Edison and Fountain Valley), John Romano (baseball coach at Yucca Valley and Nogales), Lyle Wilkerson (baseball coach at Corona High) and Billy York (cross country coach at Woodcrest Christian).
