Chargers come up short at Santa Ynez

A Dos Pueblos comeback attempt fell short in the fourth quarter at Santa Ynez, and the Chargers lost a 35-28 decision in a non-league football game on Friday night.

Trailing 35-14, DP capitalized on a couple of bad snaps on Santa Ynez punts. Quarterback Kellen Roberts directed two quick scoring drives, the last one coming with two minutes left. Roberts hit Josh Flora for the touchdown to pull the Chargers to within a touchdown.

But undefeated Santa Ynez, behind the running of Austin Vreeland, was able to hang on to the ball and improve to 3-0. Dos Pueblos falls to 1-2.

The Santa Ynez defense kept Roberts and the Chargers from making big plays. Roberts threw the ball 49 times and completed 29 passes for 215 yards.

DP trailed 21-14 early in the fourth quarter before the Pirates’ Tye Hollingsworth capped a long drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Then came the back-breaker for the Chargers. Vreeland broke outside and burst up the sideline for a 66-yard score that put the Pirates up 35-14.
