UCSB’s Strong on U.S. U-23 team for Mexico match

Sam Strong, a San Marcos graduate and UCSB soccer recruit, has been named to the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team for a friendly match against Mexico on Wednesday night at the StubHub Center in Carson.

Strong, a defender, is one of two college players on coach Andi Herzog’s 20-man roster The other is Stanford sophomore Jordan Morris, who scored the first goal for the U.S. Senior National Team in a 2-0 win over Mexico last week.

Strong has been playing for the Real So Cal Soccer Club in the U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy.

Nine of the players were part of the USA’s 2013 U-20 World Cup team: Cody Cropper, Luis Gil, Alonso Hernandez, Benji Joya, Juan Pablo Ocegueda, Shane O’Neill, Mario Rodriguez, Oscar Sorto and Jose Villarreal.

Eleven players were on the squad that defeated Bosnia’s U-23 team 5-2 on March 27, including all five U.S. goalscorers from that game: Fatai Alashe, Morris, Rodriguez, Joya and Hernandez.
