SWM: UCSB’s Mullis named MPSF Freshman of the Year

Nearly a month after the resolution of the 2014-2015 swimming season, Billy Mullis was selected as the MPSF Conference Freshman of the Year.

Mullis came in to UCSB Swimming after four very successful years swimming on his high school team in Vacaville, Calif. and his club team, DART.

After earning nine points in his Gaucho swimming debut versus the men of USC, it was clear Mullis was going to be an impactful addition to the strong men’s team. By his second meet he had already had his first individual win.

Mullis would go on to compete in every meet of regular season, totaling 15 wins and 276 total points.

At MPSF Championships Mullis competed all four days, earning a total of two relay wins and 84 total points. These points came from his 1:36.70 split on the men’s winning 800 relay, 44.52 100 free split on the men’s winning 400 freestyle relay, as well as his individual finishes in the 200 back (second) and 500 free (third). He also competed on the second-place 200 and 400 medley relay teams. His 22.44 backstroke split from the 200 medley was a new UCSB school record.

After his performances at MPSF Championships he was named Freshman of the Meet.

The Gauchos look forward to having Mullis compete for three more years with the men’s swimming team.
