SFT: Royals capture another close one

San Marcos scored in every inning but one in Thursday’s 7-4 victory over Pacifica in a PAC View Challenge tournament game. Pacifica loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning but the Royals were able to close out the victory.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and, after the Tritons tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second, added two runs in the third and one more in the fourth to gain a 4-1 edge. San Marcos’ biggest lead was 5-1.

Hailee Rios was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored on offense. Rios turned in a dominate pitching performance as well, striking out 10 batters in a complete-game effort.

Veronica Villarreal went 2 for 3 and scored two runs with 3 RBI. Hailey Fryklund and Cara Christian were also 2 for 3.

Pacifica loaded the bases in the seventh inning and scored a run from third base on a single. A good relay from the outfield by Aibhlin Ryan and shortstop Aliyah Huerta-Leipner allowed Fryklund to tag the runner from second base in a run-down on the third-base line.

“This was another exciting finish to what could have been a very close game,” said Royals head coach Jeff Swann. “Hailee Rios pitched a very efficient game and was backed up by two key hits from Veronica Villarreal who drove in three runs on the day.”

San Marcos improves to 10-5 on the season.
