GLF: Royals win; Ventura’s Johnson sets Channel League record

San Marcos picked up the Channel League victory on Tuesday but it was Ventura that really had something to celebrate. The Cougars’ Jacob Johnson carded an eight-under 62 at BuenaVentura Golf Course to set a new Channel League record.

Johnson eagled the 18th hole to set the new mark. The 62 broke the record of 63 shared by James Morton, Mason Field and Albert Corral.

San Marcos won the match 362-373. Sam Metzger led the Royals with a two-under 68. Niels Andersen posted an even-par 70 and all San Marcos scorers were at 78 or under.

“I was proud of all the boys today for their course management,” said coach Aaron Solis. “They made some very smart decisions today.”

The result gives San Marcos a perfect 4-0 record after the first round of league play.

“This was an important win for the Royals to close out the first round of Channel League play at 4-0,” Solis said. “Ventura is always dangerous on their home course.”
