BTen: Perfect opening round sets the pace for San Marcos

Led by a stellar performance in doubles as well as an explosive 6-0 start overall, the San Marcos boys tennis team dominated Ventura 13-5 on Thursday to close out the regular season.

Daniel Coulson swept two of his matches in the singles department before stepping away from his duties. Derek Tilton prevailed in two of his three sets on the day.

The doubles department faltered only a single game, securing eight out of the nine played. The power duo of Lars Scannell and Oliver Piltch when undefeated in the day while the tandem of Nick Leeds and Sebastian Gutierrez also went 3-0. Cody Andersen and Anthony Burre paired up to tally two sets before they were substituted.

Head coach Jarrod Bradley gave credit to Leeds and Gutierrez saying: “Nick and Sebastian played with supreme confidence today, showing aggression at the net and placing a high percentage of first serves in play.”

The Royals improve to 4-4 in league, 9-8 overall and are set to host the Channel League singles and doubles individual tournament starting on Monday.
