BTen: Dons put it all together to defeat No. 6 Mira Costa

Santa Barbara High scored one its biggest wins of the season on Saturday, knocking off Mira Costa in a battle of Division top-10 boys tennis teams.

Mira Costa (9-6) entered the match ranked No. 6 in CIF Division 1. Santa Barbara (11-2) is No. 8.

Coach Greg Tebbe called a true team effort. The Dons won four of six points in the last two rounds to overcome a 4-2 deficit.

“We had two victories each from our three singles players and two victories each from two out of our three doubles teams,” Tebbe said. “While our third doubles team of Jake Sutton and Max Mercurio did not win a set, they won valuable games in all three of their matches. And, if the match had been tied 9-9, we would have won on total games due to efforts like theirs.

“This is definitely our biggest win so far this season and one of the most satisfying wins I have experienced as a coach.”

Jackson Powell, Miles Hale and Harry deBoer all went 2-1 in singles for the Dons. In doubles Jordan Rodnick/Logan Lender and Taggart Mills/Tyler Greenwald also won two sets.

“Our team played focused tennis from start to finish and we had incredible positive energy throughout the match,” said Tebbe.

The Dons return to Channel League play on Tuesday at Dos Pueblos and host Ventura on Wednesday. On Thursday, they head to the Ojai Invitational.
