96th Russell Cup: Cate’s Serugo, OC’s Hutchinson have big meets

Oaks Christian’s Maya Hutchinson won three events and posted the second best long jump in CIF Division 4 this season at Saturday’s 96th Russell Cup track and field invitational at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

The meet draws many of the top Division 4 athletes in the CIF-Southern Section. There were several marks in the meet that rank among the best in the division.

Joel Serugo of Cate had a big meet. He won the boys triple jump at 44-8, the second best mark in D4, took second in the long jump at 20-4.25 and finished third in the 200 at 23.07.

In the 100, Branden Smith of Paraclete edged out Bishop Diego’s AV Bennett for top honors. Smith, the division leader in the event, was clocked at 11.15 and Bennett was timed in 11.8. Those are the second and third fastest times this season. Smith also won the 200 in 22.85.

Nordhoff’s Cameron Kunde ran the second fastest 1600 with a time of 4:17.69

Vince Porter of Pasadena Poly surpassed his top mark in the high jump with a leap of 6-9. He cleared 6-6 at the Arcadia Invitational.

Clayton Mackey of Templeton ran one of the fastest times in the 300 hurdles at 39.02.

Gabriel Zapien-Ybarra finished second in the discus with a throw of 147-7. Justin Coert of Fillmore was the event winner at 149-0, the No. 2 mark this season

On the girls side, Hutchinson put on a show, winning the 100 hurdles in 15.70, the long jump at 17-1.75 and the high jump at 5-3. Her teammate Jordann Feinstein won the 300 hurdles in 46.21.

Caroline Pietrzyk of Malibu ran the second fastest 1600 in the division at 5:04.45.

In the pole vault, Morro Bay’s Sierra Emrick cleared 11-9, the No. 2 mark in the division behind her 12-3.
