GBK: Bishop’s experience wears down Carpinteria

Bishop Diego pulled away from Carpinteria midway through the third quarter and won a 41-24 non-league girls basketball game on Monday night in Carpinteria.

Carpinteria was down by eight, 20-12, and had chances to narrow the gap.

“We had a couple of good looks,” Carpinteria coach Dan Mercer said. “Then we lost our composure.”

Bishop Diego pulled away behind the scoring and defense of Jordyn Lilly and Morgan Wallace. Lilly had 15 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Wallace scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals. Hannah Rogers scored eight points and had nine rebounds.

“We played an experienced group with those three seniors, Wallace, Lilly and Rogers,” Mercer said. “They kept their composure when we made a little run in the third quarter.”

Bishop coach Jeff Burich said he felt his team was sluggish at the start. “I think we were still a little tired from the weekend (tournament on Catalina Island),” he said. “This was a tough game for us to come back and play. I was pleased with the effort of how we played in a rivalry game.”

He credited Carpinteria’s defense for limiting the passes inside to Rogers and holdin her under 10 points.

Mercer chalked up the game as part of his team’s growing pains.

The Warriors open Frontier League play on Thursday against Foothill Tech at Ventura College. Bishop Diego opens Tri-Valley League play at home Thursday against Nordhoff.
