Dons tennis combo, DP’s Coronado named Athletes of the Week

The Santa Barbara High doubles team of Mattea Kilstofte (top)  and Madison Hale advanced to the CIF semifinals.

The Santa Barbara High tennis doubles team of Mattea Kilstofte and Madison Hale and Dos Pueblos wrestlers Jonathan Coronado were honored as the Athletes of the Week at the final Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon of 2014 on Monday.

Kilstofte and Hale won two matches to advance to the semifinals of the CIF Individual Girls Tennis Tournament in Seal Beach. It’s the furthest a Dons doubles team has advanced since 1997.

Coronado overcame deficits in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final bout to take the 170-pound division title at the Pete Duca Invitational at Pioneer Valley High. His victory helped the Chargers capture the team title, their first tournament championship in more than five years.

The honorable mention choices for the females were Amber Melgoza (Santa Barbara High basketball) and Paige Hauschild (San Marcos water polo.

The other male candidates nominated for the award include Bolden Brace (Santa Barbara High basketball), Robert Soto (Santa Barbara High soccer) and Cody Williams (SBCC basketball).
