UCSB hosting 37th annual Turkey Trot

Santa Barbara, California — November 18, 2014 — The 37th annual Turkey Trot charity run and walk hosted by UCSB Recreational Sports will take place on Saturday, November 22, with participants passing through the campus lagoon, Campus Point Beach, Isla Vista, and the Devereux Lagoon.

The event will consist of a 5K run and walk for participants of all levels, and a 10K run for those looking for healthy competition and a challenge. The first 165 participants to register will receive a free t-shirt and gift cards will be awarded to the Men’s and Women’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place runners in each category. The starting point will be on the Lagoon Faculty Club Lawn. The scenic 5K route will loop around the lagoon, passing by Campus Point beach. The 10k will follow a course around the lagoon into Isla Vista, past Devereux Lagoon and the Coal Point Oil Reserves Beach, before looping back to the start.

“What sets the UCSB Turkey Trot apart from other 5k and 10ks runs is our course and our staff,” said Recreation Events Director Brenda Lear. “Both runs have breathtaking views with our staff along the way at numerous stations, cheering you on and providing any supported needed. It is always a great day.”

Proceeds from the registration fees benefit the Chad Briner Student Staff Development Fund. Briner was a UCSB student and Rec Sports staff member who passed away in 2008. He made a significant contribution to the Rec Sports team by helping to found the organization’s website, Gauchosplay.com. The fund set up in his honor promotes leadership within the Department of Recreation by supporting department-wide workshops and conferences. Money also goes towards various staff development activities.

The Turkey Trot began in 1978 as a way for faculty, students, and community members to start the holiday season on a healthy note. Past trots have drawn hundreds of participants, however Rec Sports staff hope to break the event’s attendance records.

“I love that the annual Turkey Trot offers something for everyone,” said Lear. “Whether you are in it to win it or are looking for a way to burn a few extra calories before thanksgiving or simply want to take in the fresh air and peaceful ocean views.”

The Turkey Trot event is open to student and community members of all ages and skill levels. Early registration fees are $25 for non-students and $20 for students until November 19th. Fees on the day of the event are increased by $5. Please visit Gauchosplay.com to download the sign-up forms or fill out the form at the Rec Sports office, located at UCSB Recreation Center, Room 1100, Santa Barbara, CA 93106. Registration at the event begins at 8:30 a.m. The 10K begins at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K begins at 9:45 a.m.
