Schroeder on CIF All-Century team for fall sports

San Marcos High alum Terry Schroeder was named to the CIF 100th anniversary Fall All-Century Team.

The top 100 student-athletes were nominated and voted on by the public.

“California has arguably the best high school student-athletes in the nation and I think this historic list of fall sport honorees chosen by the fans reflects our states great legacy of outstanding student-athletes,” stated CIF Executive Director Roger L. Blake.

Online voting for the Fall All-Century team was September 1-October 31, 2014 at www.cifstate.org. All student-athletes that were nominated appeared on the ballot. The public could vote for as many student-athletes as they desired and as many times as they wanted.

Schroeder was a water polo standout for the Royals in the mid-1970s, graduating in 1976. He went on to become the face of USA men’s water polo and the body of the Olympic male athlete — his body was the model for a statue that stood outside the L.A. Coliseum during the 1984 Games.

Schroeder made four U.S. Olympic teams (1980, ’84, ’88, ’92) and won silver medals in ’84 and ’88. He also coached the U.S. team in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, guiding it to a silver medal in ’08.

Schroeder had an outstanding collegiate career at Pepperdine. He was a three-time All-American and remains the program’s all-time goal-scoring leader with 392. As the coach of the Waves, he guided them to their only NCAA title in 1997.

Also making the Fall All-Century team is Lompoc High football star Napoleon Kaufman, a 1990 graduate.

In his high school career, Kaufman rushed for 5,151 yards and 86 touchdowns. He led the Braves to a CIF championship as a senior and was named a first-team prep All-American.

Kaufman went on to star at the University of Washington and played in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders for six years. Today, he is a minister in the Bay Area.

Winter and Spring honorees will be selected and acknowledged during their respective CIF State and Regional Championship seasons. Winter All-Century Team voting will begin on December 1, 2014.
