Stovesand, Cardinals crush Mission Prep

Bishop Diego worked on its passing game during its bye week.

The work paid off on Friday night at Mission Prep, as quarterback Spencer Stovesand completed 15 of 19 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Cardinals to a 31-14 non-league football win in San Luis Obispo.

The Cardinals, the sixth-ranked team in the CIF Northern Division, led 31-0 after three quarters.

Stovesand started his big night with a 37-yard scoring pass to running back Abel Gonzalez at 7:15 of the first quarter. Kohl Vemo kicked the extra point.

Vemo booted a 33-yard field goal to put the Cardinals 10-0 in the first quarter.

Stovesand combined with Matt Shotwell for a 19-yard scoring pass at 9:57 of the second quarter. The PAT failed, leaving the Cardinals with a 16-0 lead.

AV Bennett scored on a 50-yard pass play and Stovesand passed to John Harris for a two-point conversion to increase the lead to 24-0 before halftime. The Cardinals defense stopped the Royals inside their 10-yard line on fourth down just before the break.

Bishop continued to exploit Mission Prep’s defense through the air in the second half. Shotwell caught his second TD pass, a 15-yarder from Stovesand for a 31-0 lead with 2:27 left in the third quarter.

Mission Prep found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to end the shutout bid.

Bishop Diego, coming off a bye last week, ups its record to 5-0 on the season. The Cardinals return home next week to host View Park (2-4) at La Playa Stadium.
