WSoc: Schornstein’s first collegiate goal is game-winner

SACRAMENTO – Freshman Chace Schornstein scored her first goal of the season in the 51st minute to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 2-0 win at Sacramtnto State on Friday afternoon. The win was the Gauchos’ second in a row and it improves their overall record to 4-3-2.

UCSB and Sac State (4-4-0) battled to a scoreless tie through the first half, but the second half was a different story.

The Gauchos took the 1-0 edge in the 51st minute when freshman Kate Shoemaker launched a shot into the box that was deflected by Schornstein into the goal, giving them a 1-0 edge.

“We were great in possession tonight,” said UCSB head coach Paul Stumpf. “But while we were dominant, we struggled a bit with the final ball and finishing in general.”

Santa Barbara made it 2-0 at the 80:11 mark when Sara Feder claimed a short cross in front of the goal from Angelisa Cortez, turned and cracked a shot past Kimberly Mata, giving the Gauchos a 2-0 lead.

“Our back six was solid again,” Stumpf said. “Angelisa and Sara were really good in the attack tonight and it makes me believe that we may be coming around.”

Junior goalkeeper Beth Ritter logged three saves, posted her third consecutive shutout and her fifth on the season.

“Beth was very solid,” Stumpf said. “We know what to expect from her and she delivers.”

The Gauchos will remain in the Central Valley on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. match against former Big West Conference opponent Pacific.
