Ed Smith won the Semana Nautica 6-mile ocean swim for the second time in four years on Sunday, reaching Hendry’s Beach from Goleta Beach in two hours, three minutes and six seconds.
The winning time was the fastest since 2010, when seven swimmers came in under two hours. Smith competed in all three of Semana Nautica’s ocean swimming events, placing 8th in the 1-mile swim and 5th in the 3-mile. The 38 year old won his age-group in all three events. That’s not all as Smith placed third in the 5-mile run/swim biathlon the day before the 6-mile event.
Smith beat second-place finisher Moby Coquillard by just 14 seconds. Jim McConica came in third in 2:06.25.
Courtney Weigand, in fourth overall, claimed the women’s title (2:06.36) over Astrid Amsallem (2:07.22, 5th overall), Stacey Warmuth (2:13.26, 9th overall) and Abigail Bergman (2:17.05, 10th overall). Bergman was the youngest competitor in the event at 18 years of age. The youngest male competitor was 30 years old.
The Semana Nautica 6-mile swim is sanctioned by the Southern Pacific Masters Swimming.
