Mitchell adds an assistant from Rutgers

The UCSB women’s basketball team has added Matt Schiff as an assistant coach/ director of basketball operations, head coach Carlene Mitchell announced.

“I am extremely pleased to have Matt join our staff,” Mitchell said. “He brings a new level of energy to our office and a passion for the game. His ability to do multiple job descriptions will allow the staff to function at a higher level. He will serve as an assistant coach while also performing basketball operations responsibilities. He brings an extensive background in video coordinating which will allow him to assist in this area as well.”

A graduate of Rutgers University, Schiff was a student manager and on the practice squad for the school’s women’s basketball team during Mitchell’s final season (2010-11) with the Scarlet Knights. He attended all practices and film sessions during that time.

Schiff played for the Rutgers men’s basketball team in the 2009-10 campaign gaining invaluable experience in the Big East Conference. He later made the transition to the women’s basketball program. From 2011-13, he assisted in day-to-day operations of the team as a student-assistant. He gained invaluable experience assisting in video and scouting breakdowns, attended staff meetings, assisted with tracking offensive and defensive plays executed in each game, as well as organized and interviewed potential student-managers and practice players for the program. During those years, he developed his basketball foundation while working under Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer.

“Matthew is a bright, passionate, up-and-coming coach in this profession,” Stringer said. “Carlene has added an element of loyalty and a tireless work ethic to her staff. Matt will be a major addition in helping her build a program at UCSB.”

Before arriving in Santa Barbara, Schiff spent a year as the Director of Basketball Operations for Morehead State’s women’s basketball program. He managed and coordinated all team travel, film exchange and assisted in video breakdown. He also held game day duties including: pre/post game meals, ticket requests and gathering stats during games. Other responsibilities included organizing community service and updating the program’s social media sites.

Prior to college, Schiff was a top-10 career scorer at Wildwood HS in New Jersey.

Schiff will join Natalie Jarrett (Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator) and Heather Zurich (Assistant Coach/Academic Coach) from Mitchell’s original staff.
