Ventura boys win SB Men’s A; Garner-Schroeder take Women’s A

A team from Ventura captured the California Beach Volleyball Association Men’s A doubles tournament, while a former SBCC player combined with a member of Pepperdine’s national championship sand team to claim the Women’s A at East Beach on Saturday.

Ariana Garner, a setter for the Vaqueros, and Pepperdine’s Leanna Schroeder defeated San Marcos High freshman Cassidy Drury-Pullen and Camille DeAraujo of Long Beach in the championship match of the Women’s A. Garner and Schroeder earned their AA ratings.

Drury-Pullen and DeAraujo received A ratings. Also earning their A were the local team of Ann Cowell and Kelsy Siegel and UCSB indoor players Shauna Klein and Jaylen Villanueva.

Venturans Tyler Cobian and Nicolas Barron won their AA by defeating Owen Yoshimoto of Ventura and Santa Barbara’s Casey Alper in the Men’s A final.

Yoshimoto, who plays at SBCC, and Alper earned their A. Third-place finishers Julian Lopez-Morgan Youngs of Carpinteria and Kyle Skinner-Chris Ferguson of Santa Barbara also achieved A ratings.

Tournament sponsors included Shalhoob Meat Company and Hollister Brewing.

WILSON EARNS AAA

In other beach volleyball action over the weekend, San Marcos senior-to-be Anika Wilson earned a AAA rating for the second straight year by finishing second at the CBVA Santa Cruz Women’s AAA with partner Lindsey Knudsen of Valencia High.

Wilson-Knudsen lost in the final against professional players Kelly Haan and Jessica Rolin. Wilson won the Santa Barbara Women’s AA last May.

In the Santa Monica Women’s AA, Santa Barbarans Sammie Brown and Sarah Mendoza finished third and earned their A ratings.
