GLF: Royals’ Metzger advances to CIF Finals

San Marcos freshman Sam Metzger shot a 1-over par 73 and qualified for the CIF Individual Championships at the Northern Regional competition at Oxnard’s River Ridge Golf Course on Monday.

Metzger was the only local player to advance to the championships on May 27 at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

The top 20 out of 106 players advanced. Spencer Soosman of Westlake won the regional with a 4-under 68.

Seventeen players shot 74 or better and nine players tied at 75, including Dos Pueblos senior Grant Amerson.

A playoff was held for the final three spots, and Amerson was knocked out on the first playoff hole when he bogeyed No. 14

Harris Tsui of Ojai Valley, Andrew Baek of Arcadia and Peter Griffith of Oaks Christian survived the playoff and earned the final qualifying spots.

San Marcos junior Niels Andersen shot a 5-over par 77, DP’s Michael Nam fired a 79 and Santa Barbara’s Brandon Crane shot an 83. Bishop Diego’s Trevor Taimuty and Alex Bollag shot 90 and 103, respectively.
