GLF: Royals’ loss at Ventura creates 3-way tie for first

The home-course advantage has worked well for the Ventura High boys golf team this season.

The Cougars had two players shoot 1-under par 69 at BuenaVentura GC and moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Channel League with a 358-373 win over San Marcos on Thursday. Ventura, San Marcos and Dos Pueblos are tied with 5-2 records going into their final matches next week. Ventura plays at DP while San Marcos is at Santa Barbara.

“We said this was the tightest Channel League race in many years,” San Marcos coach Aaron Solis said.

Tyler Murata and Alex Hood each shot 69 to pace the Cougars. Jacob Johnson shot even-par 70.

Sam Metzger and Niels Andersen led the Royals with 71s.

“Ventura has been amazing on their home course this season, where they have been 60-80 strokes better on their home course,” Solis said. “This makes it very difficult to beat them at BuenaVentura. I’m proud of the guys for hanging in there today and excited for next week with a Channel League title on the line.”
