DP’s Buratto, Scarvelis sweep Athlete of the Week honors

It took arm strength to be this week’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.

Dos Pueblos baseball pitcher Daniel Buratto and Charger track and field standout Stamatia Scarvelis were recognized as this week’s winners at Monday’s SBART press luncheon.

Stamatia Scarvelis posted the top shot put and discus marks in the state at the Trabucco Hills Invite.

Buratto fired a one-hit shutout against crosstown rival San Marcos in a Channel League baseball game. The junior left-hander had terrific control in the 3-0 game. He didn’t a walk a batter and the lone hit off him came in the sixth inning.

Scarvelis, the two-time CIF State champion, raised her outdoors personal best in the shot put to 53-3.50 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational. The mark is No. 1 in the state this year and the sixth-best all-time in the U.S. She threw 53-8.25 indoors at the Simplot Games in Idaho back in February.

Scarvelis also won the discus at Trabuco Hills with a season-best of 157-4. It’s the top mark in the state and No. 3 in the country.

Named as honorable mention for the award were Lani Evans (Dos Pueblos softball), Hailee Rios (San Marcos softball) and Becky Collier (Westmont track).

The honorable mention list for male athletes includes Christian Widmer (San Marcos volleyball), Sam Metzger (San Marcos golf), Jonah Seif (UCSB volleyball) and Brandon Gildea (Westmont baseball).
