Area ADs propose three-tier football association

In the third go-round of Northern Area high school athletics re-leaguing, the proposal that was passed by athletic directors on Tuesday was a three-tiered football-only association involving 12 schools, including St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian. Fifty-one of 60 ADs attended the meeting. The vote was 31-20.

The proposed Marmonte/Camino/Canyon Association (MCC) will group the dozen schools in three football leagues, based on their MaxPreps state rankings for the first two years (2014-15) of the four-year re-leaguing cycle. For 2016-17, the makeup of the leagues will be determined by state rankings, a point formula based on league finish the previous two years and other guidelines.

For the next two football seasons, Oaks Christian, St. Bonaventure, Westlake and Moorpark will compete in the Marmonte League.

Newbury Park, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and Royal will make up the Camino League.

Agoura Simi Valley, Oak Park and Calabasas will be in the Canyon League.

THE RE-LEAGUING PROPOSAL

For all other sports, the Marmonte League will include Agoura, Calabasas (except aquatics), Newbury Park, Oaks Christian, Thousand Oaks and Westlake.

The newly formed Camino League will be made up of Camarillo, Moorpark, Oak Park, Royal, Simi Valley and Calabasas for aquatics only.

The Channel League will remain five teams for the next four years: Santa Barbara, San Marcos, Dos Pueblos, Ventura and Buena.

The Tri-County Athletics Association, which includes Bishop Diego and Carpinteria, loses Oak Park and Oaks Christian but picks up Condor League schools Cate and Thacher and new school, Ventura-Foothill Tech. St. Bonaventure also will compete in the TCAA in all sports except football.

With the loss of Camarillo, the Pacific View League is reduced to five schools: Channel Islands, Hueneme, Oxnard, Pacifica and Rio Mesa.

The latest proposal by the Northern Area will be submitted to the CIF-SS Executive Council for approval.
