SBHS girls top-seeded for CIF regionals; Dons boys get tourney bid

The CIF-Southern Section 3AA Division-champion Santa Barbara High girls basketball team received a No. 1 seeding in the CIF State Regionals and will open the tournament with a home game on Wednesday night against Shafter High of the Central Section.

The Dons (26-5) are playing in Division 3.

The Santa Barbara High boys got new life when they learned Sunday that they received a state tournament bid. The Dons will travel to Eagle Rock of the L.A. City Section in a Division 3 first-round regional game on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

CIF STATE REGIONAL BRACKETS

The Santa Barbara boys (25-3), lost in the CIF-SS 3A Division semifinals to eventual champion Oak Park. Eagle Rock won the L.A. City Division 3 championship, it’s first basketball title in the school’s 87-year history. The Eagles (22-12) are led by 6-4 senior Stewart Ramirez. He scored 35 points in the 68-56 title win over Hamilton on Saturday.

Santa Barbara last played on Feb. 28.

Chaminade and Cathedral, are the top two seeds in the Division 3 regional. They were in the 3A Division with Santa Barbara but were picked to play in the Open Division of the Southern Section playoffs.

The Santa Barbara girls celebrated their first CIF title in program history on Saturday, beating Lake Elsinore-Lakeside, 67-43, behind Amber Melgoza’s 38 points

Shafter (23-8) lost in the semifinals of the Central Section Division 3 playoffs against Selma, 63-55.

The second round for both boys and girls is on Saturday. The regional semifinals are Tuesday, March 18 and the regional finals are Saturday, March 20 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.
