Local prep standouts sign National Letters of Intent

Nine local high school student-athletes took the first step toward the next chapter in their athletic and academic lives on Wednesday by signing National Letters of Intent with NCAA Division 1 universities.

The day started with Bishop Diego holding a ceremony for football standouts Joe Salcedo and Nolan Tooley in the gym. In front of students, faculty and family, Salcedo signed with San Diego State and Tooley with UC Davis.

Four student-athletics at San Marcos put their signatures on letters of intent, including a pair that staying home to attend UCSB. Dasha Depew will compete on the women’s swimming team and Shane Hauschild signed with the Gauchos in men’s water polo. The Royals who signed are soccer players: girls team goalkeeper Hannah Harrah is headed to Loyola Marymount and boys midfielder Robbie Landeros is taking his game to Seattle University.

At Dos Pueblos, two-time CIF State shot put champion and junior national champion Stamatia Scarvelis made it official Wednesday by signing with UCLA. She declared she would become a Bruin at halftime of last Friday’s DP basketball game.

CIF State cross country runner-up Addi Zerrenner also is headed to a Pac-12 school. She signed with Arizona. Also from DP, football coach Nate Mendoza reported that all-Channel League and Presidio Sports All-City player Leshon Bell  is headed to Michigan State as a “preferred walk-on.”

Santa Barbara High continued its tradition of sending water polo players to Division 1 schools. From this year’s senior class, Betsy Hendrix signed with UCSB and Anna Brummett is headed to Indiana University.
