MBK: SBCC suffers loss at Long Beach City

Kristien Owens scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and Long Beach City edged SBCC 63-57 on Friday in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Long Beach.

The Vikings (7-6) led 27-22 at halftime before the Vaqueros took a 34-33 lead on a triple by Samuel Kelley and a jumper by Prince Arceneaux. Long Beach regained control with a 17-5 run that produced its biggest lead at 50-39 with 6:39 to play.

SBCC (1-10) pulled within six at 55-49 on a layup by Pablo Miranda but could get no closer as Long Beach hit 6-10 free throws in the final 63 seconds.

Miranda had 14 points and five assists and Arceneaux scored all 14 of his points in the second half. Arceneaux grabbed nine rebounds, sharing the team lead with Stephen Harper.

Harper tallied six points and Alonzo McCain added eight points and five assists.

The Vaqueros outshot the home team 37 to 36 percent but the Vikings got to the free-throw line 17 more times, making 17-of-28 compared to 9-11 for the Vaqueros.

SBCC will open WSC North play on Saturday, Jan. 11 when it hosts new division member, Canyons, at 7 p.m.
