No. 1 Bishop plays a top-10 opponent in next game

Bishop Diego remained as the No. 1 team in the CIF-SS Northwest Divison after Week 1 of the high school football season.

The Cardinals, who have posted back-to-back shutouts over Santa Maria and  Santa Ynez, figure to get a tougher game on Friday when the play La Salle  at La Play Stadium. La Salle (1-1) is ranked No. 8 in the Northwest Division.

Nordhoff (2-0) remains No. 2 in the division, while Carpinteria dropped from third to fourth despite winning its second straight game. Centennial-Compton jumped to the No. 3 position after a 48-0 rout of Compton.

Lompoc, which lost at Bakersfield-Frontier,  is the only county team ranked in the Western Division. The Braves are No. 3 behind top-ranked Serra and No. 2 Chaminade.

In the Northern Division, St. Joseph is ranked sixth and Righetti is ninth.
