The top seeds in both the Men’s and Women’s Open at the 77th Santa Barbara Tennis Open were ousted from contention over the weekend, as the men’s tournament whittled its field to four remaining singles players and the women two.
Second-seeded Nicholas Ballou will face unseeded Jack Sanford in one semifinal and third-seeded Garrett Patton will take on Matt Seeberger. Sanford and Seeberger reached the semis as unseeded players.
Lauren Stratman won three matches to reach the women’s final
In the women’s draw, Katsiaryna Zheltova upset No. 1 seed Zsuzsanna Fodor 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals and will meet second-seeded Lauren Stratman in the championship match.
The final matches will be played on Saturday at the Tennis Club of Santa Barbara. Men’s singles semifinals will start at 11 a.m. and the final is slated for 2:30 p.m., which is also when the women’s final will be played.
The championship matches in the men’s and women’s open doubles is TBD because of scheduling conflicts.
Seeberger, from Redwood City, knocked out top-seeded Noah Newman 7-5, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.
The top seed didn’t last in the open men’s doubles tournament either, as Ballou and Seeberger fell to Guillaume Gauthier and Andras Bori 6-3, 6-1. Those two will see Patton and Spencer Simon in the final. Simon and Patton beat Miles Seemann and Sasha Gryaznov 6-2, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
