Westmont women’s basketball announces two more recruits

Westmont Women’s Basketball has announced the addition of two more signees to the 2013 recruiting class. Aimee Brakken of Issaquah, Washington and Aysia Shellmire of Burbank will join the Warriors this fall for the start of the 2013-14 season. Brakken and Shellmire complete a talented and deep freshmen class that also includes Cora Chan, Natalie Florescu, and Sydney Hedges.

Shellmire, a 6-1 forward from Burroughs High School, led her team to a Pacific League Championship in 2011 and 2013. In her senior year, she averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, 3.7 blocks and two steals per game. She was named to the All-Pacific League first team in 2011 and named the Pacific League Player of the Year in 2013. She was also honored as an All-CIF Southern Section Division I-A second team selection.

In the classroom, Shellmire earned scholar-athlete recognition from 2011-2013 and was an Optimist Club scholarship recipient in 2013. She also earned the 2013 Brian Hurst Award of academic and athletic achievement.

“Aysia is a dynamic player that finds ways to score inside using her athleticism. Her rebounding will be a great asset to our team,” said Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore. “It will also be a great advantage that she has played with two other incoming freshmen, Cora Chan and Natalie Florescu. Their experience playing together will add to the great team chemistry both on and off the court that we at Westmont care so deeply about.”

Brakken, a four-year varsity player from Issaquah High School, led her team to a Kingco 4A Crest Division Championship in 2010 and 2011. The 5-9 guard was voted team MVP and selected to the All-Kingco Conference 4A second team. Brakken, who served as team captain her senior year, holds the Issaquah High School season record for three-point field goal percentage and for charges drawn per game.

“Aimee is a perfect fit for Westmont College and we are excited to have her bring her great work ethic, toughness, and competitiveness to our team,” said Moore, “She is a model student-athlete that is committed to excellence in all that she does. We cannot wait to get her in a Warrior uniform.”

In addition to her accolades on the basketball court, Brakken is a four-time Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Scholar-Athlete. She was involved in the leadership program at Issaquah serving as the ASB Assemblies Coordinator and the Inter-High District Representative. She is also active in her church with Youth Leadership.
