CBB: Reveles, Gilbert receive WSC North’s top awards



SBCC shortstop Steven Reveles was selected as the baseball Player of the Year in the WSC North on Sunday and Tyler Gilbert shared the Pitcher of the Year award with Cuesta’s Andrew Nelson.

Reveles, a sophomore shortstop from Dos Pueblos High, was the fifth-leading hitter in conference at .372. He’s currently on an 11-game hit streak and leads the state in stolen bases with 30.

Gilbert, a 6-3 freshman left-hander from Santa Cruz, went 5-0 in conference with a 2.25 ERA. He had the second-most strikeouts (42) and walked just eight batters. For the season, Gilbert is 9-1 with a 2.07 ERA.

The Vaqueros (20-16, 12-8) won their last three games to finish second in the WSC North and earn their third straight playoff berth. They were seeded No. 17 for the Southern Cal Regional and will open on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. game at No. 16 Compton (21-15).

The winner advances to a best-of-3 weekend series at No. 1 Fullerton (25-11).

Zach Zehner, who hit .318 in conference and .366 overall, was a first-team All-WSC North pick.

Second-team choices included catcher Jared Dinges (.351 in conference), outfielder Tony Simon who had a 25-game hit streak earlier in the year, Tyler Sharp, Andy Smith, pitcher Connor Detko and reliever Stephen Foote.

Mark Jebbia (.354 in conference), Colby Taylor and pitcher Brendon Shoemake made honorable mention.
