Gabe Speier threw seven and two-thirds innings on Saturday as Dos Pueblos’ baseball team bested Newbury Park 6-5 in a nine-inning game.
Speier struck out 10 batters and allowed two earned runs.
Newbury Park scored three times in the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5, creating a dramatic finish.
The Chargers answered in the top of the ninth. James Savage singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by Luke Coffey. Drake Gilliland, who was 2-for-4 at the plate, singled home Savage for the game-winning run.
Josh Tedeschi recorded the final two outs with runners on base in the bottom of the ninth for the save. Reliever Phil Zajic was credited with the win.
“This was a great ball game with lots of excitement,” reported Chargers head coach Nick Katzenstein. “I’m proud of the kids for never getting down. The wind could have easily been taken out of their sails after giving up those three in the 8th but we answered right back in the 9th.”
Speier was also 2-for-4 with the bat including an RBI. Ben York had two hits with an RBI.
